Artist Bio

Sigurd Schou was a Danish Impressionist painter who focused on loose depictions of pastoral and coastal landscapes. Born and raised in Denmark, he enrolled in the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and went on to develop an Impressionistic stylization of landscapes such as these.

In this oil study of a seascape, Sigurd Schou creates a dazzling view of the sea using bright, warm hues of nature against the cool depths of the sea. His application of paint seems to roll off the canvas in short, bright strokes, drawing the viewer into a coast that stands still as it ambiguously depicts dawn or dusk. Schou lays the paint onto the canvas in an incredibly thick manner, making the piece feel tactile.
